Q & A with Brendon Foss

University of Minnesota-Morris wide receiver Brendon Foss recently answered a few questions for us about his football experience and his performance this past weekend which earned our Outstanding Athlete of the Week award. Brendon is our third repeat winner as he joins Brendan Chambers and Luke Rothe as the only three to have the honor of repeating as Outstanding Athletes as Brendon also won in week 8 of last season. Congratulations again Brendon, you earned it, keep up all the hard work and we wish you a great season.

The Numbers:

Brendon was a big part of the Cougars 45-38 victory over the Westminster Blue Jays as the team’s leading receiver. He caught 13 passes for 196 yards and 3 touchdowns of 7, 22, and 14 yards. His final two catches turned out to be the most important, with an 11 yard reception followed by his 14 yard touchdown catch to put the Cougars up by 7 in overtime. With Foss’s performance this week, he now leads the UMAC in receiving yards (599) and ties for the lead in touchdown receptions (7) with IWC’s Ridge Hobbs and CSS’s Cory Gebhard.

Q&A:
(Photo from UMMcougars.org)

What was the biggest key to your individual success in last week’s performance?
It was a total team effort and hard fought win. For me it helped that Wesminster played single coverage most the time and we played it well offensively.

Where does your recent performance rank for you on your list of individual best games?
This is the highest amount of yards I have put up in a single college game, coming close to a few games last year. It was just an exciting game getting the W in double OT

What is the biggest area of your game do you want to improve on moving forward?
I want to get better with using my hands to get rid of defenders and consistently run crisp routes.

What is going to be the key to your team succeeding this week?
The teams are evenly matched across the UMAC this year. Anyone can win on any given week so we have to show up and be ready to play an improved Crown team this week.

Who has the made the greatest impact on your football career?
I can't single out one person but my family, friends, and teammates have always been very supportive.

What was your most memorable game in high school?
I'm getting to old to remember specific games of the old 9-man football days at Hancock High school. Tough to beat playing under the lights on Friday nights though.

What do you love most about the game of football?
Football is the biggest team sport today. Takes 11 guys doing their assignments to be successful.

What extracurricular activities besides football do you participate in at your school?
I also play basketball for the Cougars and will be doubling up on practices the remainder of the season.

Brendon also added, “I thank God for the ability and opportunity to play the game some people can't. Thanks!”

Week 6 Power Rankings

(Photo credit to Avery Marie Photography)
There are four weeks left of conference play and the only teams mathematically left in contention for the championship are Greenville, St. Scholastica, Eureka, and Northwestern. But Northwestern’s chances are next to none as it would depend on the Eagles winning out and the other three losing out, with Eureka beating the Saints next week and the Saints defeating the Panthers in the last game of the year. So in all likelihood, the Panthers, Saints, or Red Devils will be playing an 11th game this season with the earned AQ bid into the playoffs. There is still a possibility of a three-way tie and the ensuing random draw for a ticket to the playoffs. Here’s hoping Commissioner Borchardt has that special box ready for the ceremony.

1. Greenville- The Panthers cruise to another win, staying undefeated through six weeks. From what I can tell, the game was not as close as the final score shows. The first team offense was pulled halfway through the third quarter, and I’m assuming defense starters were also sat as the game went on, helping the Highlanders close the gap with three late scores. Brendan Chambers continues to lead this run-heavy offense with command, scoring three times on the ground in their victory. Greenville should have a smooth ride to the last game of the season.

2. St. Scholastica- In their first real test of the season, the Saints pass, but not with flying colors. They faced Northwestern’s tough defense and were limited to only 119 yards on the ground, compared to the 328 they had averaged against their four other UMAC opponents. The Saints also turned the ball over four times, but were lucky enough to immediately get the ball back from two of their turnovers with two uncharacteristic fumbles from Northwestern’s RB Josh Sinnen. I would, however, like to take partial credit for the Saints’ win, as it seems they followed my keys to the game I listed in my prediction. So while they did finally rack up a win over a quality team, the Saints do not look as good as last year’s team and far from the dominant team they were two seasons ago.

3. Eureka- The Red Devils are continuing to look like serious contenders each week as they tally up another easy win. Offensively they are performing better each week, getting their first 100-yard rushing performance out of RB Corey Dawson this season. QB Blake Robles spread the ball around to ten different targets, completing 20 passes with 4 TDs and no interceptions. While you should never overlook a team as they face MacMurray next week, the game that you know is on everyone’s mind is their matchup against St. Scholastica in two weeks which will determine whether or not they have a chance at a conference championship.

4. Northwestern- This team has flashes of excellence followed by flashes of inexperience and youth. The Eagles jumped out quickly versus St. Scholastica, turning two Saints’ turnovers into 14 points before the first quarter horn sounded. But from then on, their offense was unable to move the ball and committed three turnovers that destroyed any momentum they may have had. There are many good athletes on this team, but their youth has hurt them in the moments and games that matter most. This season will be a good building block for next year.

5. Minnesota-Morris- After scoring 45 points in a loss a week ago, the Cougars again score 45 points but this time they added to their win column. They brought QB Caleb McLaren back and he continued his impressive quarterbacking, and despite throwing 4 interceptions, still led the Cougars to a victory. Brendon Foss had his first 100 yard receiving game of the year, almost gaining 200 yards on the day. The Cougars now have the leader in passing yards and receiving yards per game in McLaren and Foss. The Cougars will gain at least a couple more wins this season, but they have yet to prove they can be included in talks for the top teams in the UMAC.

6. Westminster- The fall continues for the Blue Jays. After two easy wins to start the conference season, Westminster has dropped three straight, allowing over 40 points per game to those opposing teams. The Blue Jays fell to the Cougars this week in overtime, despite Ronnie Seals Jr. rushing for 230 yards and 3 scores. Seals has rushed for over 100 yards in every game this season, and leads all UMAC running backs by nearly 200 yards. The defense has been unable to stop the above average offenses and that has led to this so far disappointing season for Westminster.

7. Crown- After five weeks against some tough opponents, the Storm come away with a win! I have not been able to find a box score for more details, but it looks like they had to battle all game as they exchanged scores with Iowa Wesleyan. Crown put together a game winning drive in overtime and this season’s hard work is beginning to produce results for them. Look for them to rack up a couple more wins before the year is done.

8. Martin Luther- The Knights faced a top 5 UMAC team and again they struggle to produce the results they have against the bottom 5 UMAC teams. They have talent on their team, but not at enough positions for them contend against the better competition. Unless they can increase their recruiting, this team may be destined to be a low level UMAC contender for a while.

9. Iowa Wesleyan- The Tigers lose a heartbreaker in overtime in front of their homecoming crowd. I like the effort they put up against a decent Crown defense. I think the Tigers have some good years ahead of them as they rebuild with non-scholarship athletes.

10. MacMurray- Nothing much to say about the Highlanders. It looks like they may have found a new quarterback in Coy Dorothy, who rushed for 2 TDs and threw another, although it was in garbage time against Greenville. They will face another tough opponent next week as they host Eureka.

Week 6 Predictions: Tommy's Picks

Tommy's Picks (5 of 5 Week 5, 23 of 30 on the season)

Man did I do good last week. Not only did I get every pick correct, I also came within 4 points of picking the St. Scholastica/MacMurray game exactly right. I predicted Luke Rothe would go off, which he did so even more than I predicted. In that same game, I said IWC WR Ridge Hobbs would have a good game, and while he didn't get as many yards receiving as I said, he made up for it with his kickoff return TD. On top of all that, I was only 1 point off of getting Crown's score correct (although I was a fair bit off with Greenville's...). So needless to say, I am on a roll and I don't feel like stopping just yet.

Minnesota-Morris @ Westminster- Although they lost by 14 last week, there was some good that came out of Westminster's loss. QB Joe Plassmeyer threw for a season high 256 yards and 3 touchdowns against a tough Eureka defense finally looking like the quarterback we saw last season. For the Cougars, they discovered a new talent last week in QB Donnie Mavencamp, who broke the school record in his first career start, throwing for 404 yards and 3 touchdowns. Although I am not sure who is starting for the Cougars this week, with first year starter Caleb McLaren also having a good year. But all that aside, these teams are very similar on defense, ranking just about equally in yards and points allowed. The advantage that Westminster has, is that they have the conference leader in rushing yards in Ronnie Seals Jr. and they did not have a 10 hour drive to get to the game. I think Seals sets a season high mark against the Cougars, going over 154 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
Westminster 34 Minnesota-Morris 27

Eureka @ Martin Luther- Eureka heads up to Minnesota this week for what could be an easy win over a young Martin Luther squad. On the other hand, Martin Luther's offense has loads of confidence after posting 68 points last week. Luke Rothe and friends will be looking to continue last week's scoring havoc against Eureka but will face some stiff opposition from the Red Devils defense who has been very good at stopping the run this season. But the Knights' offense has a lot of tricks up their sleeves and could be a surprise to Eureka. If I had to pick an upset this week, this would be it. However, I do not have to so I am not going to. But if it does go the other way, I'm going to claim half a win. Eureka 41 Martin Luther 33

Greenville @ MacMurray- Its a rough three week stretch for MacMurray as they faced St. Scholastica last week and now play host to the Panthers before Eureka comes into town next week. Playing the top three conference teams in a row is tough for any team, but especially so for a MacMurray team that needs morale boosting more than anyone in the UMAC. I really wish I could find some way to pick the Highlanders in this game, but really either on paper or on the field, there's not a reasonable way. Greenville will take home a relatively easy win. Greenville 45 MacMurray 14

Crown @ Iowa Wesleyan- I really don't know what to think about this Crown team. They have faced a lot of solid teams so far and have not really been blown out yet, despite a lack of offensive production. Their defense is sneaky good – even when they allow opposing teams to gain yards, they do not let them convert those drives into points. Iowa Wesleyan has been in a few blowouts, winning one and losing a couple, before that shootout last week with Martin Luther. It's been a tough ride so far for both teams, and neither team really stands out, but I think the Tigers will win one for their home crowd. Iowa Wesleyan 21 Crown 14

Game of the Week

St. Scholastica @ Northwestern- This is one of those games I was looking forward to before the season even started and I am even more excited for it now. After the Eagles upset the Saints last season, St. Scholastica will be looking for blood as they head to Northwestern's home turf (well technically home grass). The Saints' have been running over teams this season with victories of 36, 28, 10, and 37, although over mostly teams in the bottom half of the conference. This week will be their first real test. Northwestern gained a lot of confidence offensively last week putting up 50 points and finishing off the win with a 2 minute drive and a defensive stand to seal the deal. I think what it comes down to is how Northwestern can stop the powerful St. Scholastica run game. The Eagles have only allowed 73 yards on the ground each week but they face a team this week who is averaging 328 rushing yards per conference game. It will be a like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. To me, its not much of a question who wins that battle. *Prediction Alert* RBs Jake Jensen and Chris Gassert combine for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Saints to victory.
St. Scholastica 28 Northwestern 17

Week 6 Predictions: Jay's Picks

Jay's Picks (3 of 5 Week 5, 21 of 30 on the season)

Last week was a rough week, not only did I get two games wrong, I got the scores way off in every game as well so I'm determined to do better this week. I put in more effort and brought back a feature from last year that will hopefully give me an edge in the game of the week. But let's talk about last week first. Crown... Where were you two weeks ago when I picked you over the Eagles? Iowa Wesleyan, I thought we had a connection, but I just don't know what to think anymore... This week has a lot of evenly matched games (besides Greenville-MacMurray) and I am excited to see what the outcomes will be. Actually, I take that back, I already know what the outcomes will be - read on to find out what is in store for this weekend.

Minnesota-Morris @ Westminster- Last week, both teams gave up a lot of points, 50 to Northwestern and 42 to Eureka. I don’t see this week being any different for these two teams and it should be a high scoring affair. The teams matchup well against each other as the Cougars boast one of the best passing games in the UMAC but Westminster’s defensive backs have a knack for getting to the ball and knocking it away or picking it off. Westminster may be able to take advantage of the Cougars on the ground just as Northwestern did last week and Plassmeyer seemed to remember how to throw last week so I think the Blue Jays will have a slight edge in this one. Westminster 38 Minnesota-Morris 34

Eureka @ Martin Luther- Even though Eureka has been one of the best teams in the UMAC this year, I wouldn’t count this as an easy win for them. There is something about Martin Luther that makes it a tough place to play and the Knights (like most teams) play better at home. However, when facing the top half of the UMAC this year, Martin Luther has struggled to score, as against Greenville and Northwestern. The Red Devils defense is tough and I don’t expect Luke Rothe to run all over them like he did with Iowa Wesleyan last week. This game will be close but I expect the Red Devils to have the upper hand. Eureka 35 Martin Luther 26

Greenville @ MacMurray- After a somewhat close call last week for Greenville, I have faith this week will not be so close. Crown’s defense performs well at home, while MacMurray’s defense hasn’t really performed no matter where they’ve played. Greenville’s offense averages 41.8 points and 348 yards rushing per game while the Highlanders’ defense gives up 40.4 points and 270.6 rushing yards per game. As you can see, there shouldn’t be too much in the way of the Panthers rushing attack this weekend. I can see Brendan Chambers coming out of the game by the end of the third quarter as the game gets out of hand for MacMurray. Greenville 56 MacMurray 13

Crown @ Iowa Wesleyan- Last week we had some uproar from some players whose game I had picked as the “Game of the Weak”. But really you shouldn't be too offended, it is just a play on words I use when two of the bottom five teams are matched up against each other. I don’t actually think you are weak. I’m sure you can bench press and squat much more than me… But anyways, this week features one of those matchups as the Crown Storm rolls into town against the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers. Crown finally gets a break from playing the top half of the conference and I believe they take advantage of it. Crown 34 Iowa Wesleyan 28

Game of the Week

St. Scholastica @ Northwestern- Besides the implications of this game and the rivalry they seem to have, this game is an interesting matchup on paper. It pits the UMAC’s second ranked running game in St. Scholastica (277 yards per game) against the top ranked run defense in Northwestern (78 yards per game). The Saints have the top ranked pass defense and Northwestern QB Jacob Fletcher will have to be wary of DBs Mike LaValley, Alec French, and Jake Turkowski who are some of the best, if not the best in the conference at their positions. If Fletcher can avoid those costly first-year starter mistakes that he seems to be free of so far this year, the Eagles can keep their playbook open and keep the Saints’ defense guessing. Unless St. Scholastica’s RBs Jake Jensen and Chris Gassert can break through the Eagles stout front seven, they will struggle offensively. Because this is a big game, I decided to bring back the keys to the game from last year.

Northwestern:

1. Stop their run game. The defensive line/linebackers need to contain the St. Scholastica running backs and limit the long runs.
2. Have fewer turnovers than St. Scholastica. They don’t make a lot of mistakes offensively so you must hold onto the ball and make smart decisions offensively.
3. Keep the playbook open. Don’t be afraid to pull out any plays you have been saving for later. The Saints defense is very well coached and unless you can stay one step ahead of them, they will be on you all day.

St. Scholastica:

1. Get after Northwestern QB Jacob Fletcher. He hasn’t made a lot of mistakes this year, but against Eureka he made errors due to pressure that ended up costing the Eagles the game.
2. Throw the ball. Northwestern’s defensive backs and pass defense is their weak spot. Get your receivers the ball.
3. Force turnovers. Rip the ball, jump the routes, and do whatever else you can do to take the ball away from their offense. You can expect them to take some back too as their defense leads the conference in turnovers forced.

This will be a very even matchup, with lots of defense, and a battle for field position. It could go either way, but I believe my pick is the correct choice. Northwestern 21 CSS 17

Q & A with Luke Rothe

Martin Luther Knights quarterback Luke Rothe recently answered a few questions for us about his football experience and his performance this past weekend which earned our Outstanding Athlete of the Week award. Luke joins Brendan Chambers as the only two repeat Outstanding Athletes as Luke also won in week 7 of last season. Congratulations again Luke, you earned it, keep up all the hard work and we wish you a great season.

The Numbers:

Luke led the Martin Luther Knights this past weekend in their 68-51 shootout victory over the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers. He completed 9 of the 13 passes he threw and totaled 183 yards on those completions with 4 of them going for touchdowns of 41, 44, 17, and 9 yards. He also threw a 2-point conversion to WR/TE Micah Plocher. As a dual-threat quarterback, he put his legs to use, running for 257 yards on 30 carries for an average of 8.6 yards a carry. He scored 3 times on the ground from distances of 5, 4, and 75 yards out while also converting a two point conversion. He contributed to 440 yards of offense and 46 points. As if all of that was not enough, Luke also tallied 2 tackles and a pass breakup as a defensive back. Luke leads Division III football in points responsible for on the season with 124 and is second in the UMAC in both passing and rushing touchdowns with 11 and 7, respectively.
