What Week 3 Taught Us

You learn something new every day. And week 3 of UMAC play taught us a number of things:

1. You cannot take anyone lightly - I thought about titling this, "Anyone can beat anyone" after Scholastica barely snuck out of New Ulm with a 21-7 win over winless Martin Luther. However, I cannot legitimately say that. After all, after Northwestern ripped apart MacMurray it is hard to imagine that even if they played 100 times the Highlanders would ever come out on top. However, football is one of those games where you better bring your A game every week because if you don't you just might end up dropping one you should win. Watch out for teams like Crown, Westminster, or Martin Luther to throw in a potential upset this season.

2. Martin Luther has a dang good defense. They were putting up some impressive performances early in the season against sub-par teams. But after shutting down a Scholastica team that hung 45 on Greenville, it is official. The Knights can play defense. All UMAC opponents take note, this is no easy win.

3. Martin Luther has a dang bad offense. 67 yards of total offense. Wow. The Knights offense is the equivalent of the replacement officials. Clueless as to what is going on around them.

4. Morris is who we thought they were. There is always that one team that takes advantage of an easy schedule to start the year and gets carried away when they are undefeated. But now it's time to get real here - Morris barely squeaked out wins against MacMurray - a team that Northwestern just annihilated- and Martin Luther - a team that put up 67 yards of total offense last week. They got a little over excited about being 2-0 and got a reality check when Greenville put them in their place. Still, don't entirely write off the Cougars. Just keep things in perspective.

5. Don't count out Westminster just yet. This is not to say that they will be a contender for a UMAC title as we thought they would be at the outset - but, after a terrible 49-7 loss to Northwestern at home to start the year they have bounced back nicely with 2 road wins over Martin Luther and Crown. Perhaps the Blue Jays have a bit of fight left in them.
